Homemade Grape Jelly

Have you ever tried home canning?  I know that the sound of it sounds a little intimidating.  I was also in that boat.  I have yet to try the pressure cooker method. (Bad memories of a small incident as a child).  To start I think you need to start easy and grape jelly is a great place to begin.  It requires few ingredients, but with tasty results. To can grape jelly, you need a water bath.  I found mine on a great sale at the grocery store with all the accessories you need.

Here is the recipe I used for the jelly:

5 cups prepared grape juice
1 1/2 cups water
1 box Fruit Pectin
7 cups sugar, measured into separate bowl

We are lucky enough to have a grape vine in the backyard to produce an abundance of grapes.  It is a lot of work to remove the seeds and skin, but it is so worth having the grape juice for homemade jelly.  It is also helpful to get a canning book.  I love to try some of the recipes out of the book, plus it has how long you should boil your jars and other canning tips.

If you haven't given canning a try,
it is never too late.

  2. Hi, I haven't tried grape jelly before. I figured it would be a hassle to cook the grapes then strain the liquid to avoid the skins but using grape juice is a great idea. I've posted a couple of canning recipes on my blog and can't wait to try some more this spring and summer. Thanks for sharing! I found you through Tip Junkie's link up party. from Holly at www.abakershouse.com

    1. Hi Holly, I am so glad you stopped by. My sister and I have been cooking grapes off our vine for the last couple years. If you have a good afternoon and a great friend, you can do quite a bit. It is a lot of hard work, but we just measure out the juice to what recipe we use and freeze it. We have fresh grape jelly throughout the winter. I will definitely check out your blog.

  3. I made grape jelly for the first time recently. It was fairly easy. Of course, the first go around I accidentally made a grape syrup. LOL
