Owl Cake

So, one of the more "in" things are Owls and who doesn't love a personalized cake.  My sister who claims to have no creativity whatsoever (I think she proved herself wrong) came up with the cutest idea for one of her girls birthday cakes.  It is so easy, that even a small helper could make this feathered friend.
You need to make two round cake in the standard size cake pans.  Frost the cakes in any color you desire.  As you can see she used a pink color.  If you need at great butter cream recipe, I always use
1/2 Cup Shortening
1/2 Cup Butter (softened)
1 teas. Vanilla
4 Cups Confectionery sugar
4 Tbs. Milk
You can also use the tub premade frosting that you purchase at the store and dye it to the color you prefer.  After you are finished frosting the cake, you can add you candies:
For the whites of the eyes, she used mini marshmallows.  The cute little feathered pattern was finished with mini Chips Ahoy!  The eyes were Reese's mini cups.  She took seven yellow Tootsie Fruit Rolls and made the claws and the beak by rolling them.  She added a cute little green bow in its hair. (Also by molding green Tootsie Fruit Rolls).  She the above pic for placement of the candies.
Hope you enjoy my first little tutorial!
