Garden Woes!

I thought that due to the extreme temperatures that we had been experiencing, my plants were suffering from a little bit of heat stress.   Not only was it hot but the little leaf eating grasshoppers were thick.   I assumed between the heat and the grasshoppers, my plants were suffering.  That was NOT the case.  One of the kids got close to one of my hollyhock plants and there on the leaf was the smallest of little beetles. They were super tiny and I had never seen anything like them before.   I of course Googled it and they looked just like the below picture and they were killing my plants.

They are called flea beetles and they did a huge amount of destruction.  They leave holes like a grasshopper would, but they will destroy a plant until it dies.

This is a Hollyhock.  It used to be really pretty.

Look at my beautiful Celosia Spiky Purple.  This is what they did to it in a matter of a week.

This is what it should look like.

They were picky little beetles and only feed on certain plants.  After looking around, my yard was completely infested with these little beetles.  I had to take evasive action and take care of my little visitors. I am going to miss some of perennials in my yard next year.  Hopefully, they will not return and my garden woes will be over.

  1. Sorry to hear about the invasion of your garden. I hate it when the bugs move in.

  2. I feel your garden pain! The heat wave killed almost all my herbs. But we haven't had any bug problems this year...*knock on wood*. Hopefully they go away!
