Pin It Hop!

I have always wondered why was the first pincushions
were made into the shape of tomatoes?
Maybe I am the only one?
So I thought I would share a little bit of why.....

Why the tomato?
According to folklore, placing a tomato on the mantle of a new home
guaranteed prosperity and repelled evil spirits.
If tomatoes were out of season, families improvised by using
a round ball of red fabric filled with sand or sawdust.
The good-luck symbol also served a practical purpose—a place to store pins.
Well, my little tomato sits upon my shelf
and is not getting much use since I worked up this.....

What could it be? No, it's not a furry green tomato.
HaHa!!
This is my very first pincushion that I have made for myself.
I started crocheting and came up with
a giant fuzzy cactus.
I crocheted it using Fun Fur Yarn.
It has made a home in a giant coffee cup pot.
It makes me happy just seeing resting on my sewing table.
Usually, if I make one, I might have to make another. So here's it's twin.

I also whipped this up a cup of joe.
It is filled with walnut shells
and is the perfect hand held size.
I hope you enjoyed your stop here.
I'm so glad you came to visit.
;)

  48. Amy, I cannot say that I have ever seen a blue tomato and I am in love. Blue has always been my favorite color and now pink is a close second now that I'm a breast cancer survivor and it's so cheery. I love it. I had no idea why the tomato is so popular as a pin cushion - ty, ty, ty for the info. I learn so much - I learn lots from these hops. Congrats on creativity of the day - very well deserved. I have no idea how you crocheted one let alone two cacti - I tried to knit with that blankety blank yarn once and gave up. I couldn't find my stitches. So, I'm in awe of your accomplishments. I know how difficult it is. And your cup of job is awesome. You have wowed we once again. Thanks for participating and sharing your creativity and being a great source of inspiration. I hope to see you again in more hops very soon.
