Playing Catch-up - Aurifil BOM

Last month, I showed you my first Aurifil BOM's and that little block flop.  I wanted to catch up with the rest of the group by the end of the month.  And guess what?  I did it.

Here is the June Block.

And last but not least, that pesky February block that was giving me so much trouble last month.

 

 

 

And it is even the right size.  I honestly could have done this block one more time, just to practice a few of the different techniques - matching all the seams - the points.  It is probably the hardest block that I have ever done.  I think I went through half of my spool of thread, unpicking the seams, and then sewing it back together.  Let's say I had a vicious cycle going of picking and sewing.  The block turned out a lot better than the first version, but it is still not perfect.  (But it just might be my favorite)

 

 

 

 

So, here are January through June blocks.  I am caught up.  Yeah!  (Celebration in progress) At least until July's block is released next week.  It is never too late to join in the fun and challenge your quilting skills. You can find the free patterns to all of these blocks at Auribuzz.

Oh Pooh!!! - A Finish

I can't claim this adorable little quilt as all my own.  I only quilted it.  My mother embroidered all the cute little Pooh characters. 

Of course, I had to show some up close of her handy work.

 

Eeyore has always been my favorite of the Hundred Acre Wood. 

 

This Eeyore with the net is my absolute favorite. 

 

I quilted it surrounding each of the embroidered pieces with a honey pot shape.  I used EQ7 and drew myself one up since I had no luck finding one on the Internet. 

I also signed her name inside the quilting.  She is planning to make one for each of her grandchildren to put in their hope chest.  A family heirloom to treasure for years to come.

 

 

It took longer for me to find the perfect backing for this treasure than quilting it, but I thought the honeycombs fit with perfectly with Pooh.  Oh, thank goodness for the local fabric shop.   That's two projects done for the week.  Both with a lot of yellow.

Modern Mini

 

I was pretty lucky recently and won this cute little set of honeycomb of Happy-Go-Lucky and some 2 1/2" hexie  paper pieces from Jan at Sew and Sow Farms.  I have been wanting to give hexies another try since I had finished my honeycomb pillow a couple weeks back.

 

 

I also won some Aurifil thread and some charms from Sew We Quilt.  We planned on going on vacation last week, so I packed up my new thread and those cute hexies for some much needed R&R.

 

 

We had a great time.  We went fishing, played horseshoes, and found any other reason to be outside.

 

That is my hubby!  I love this picture.  I am not sure how many fish you can catch while you are dozing on a rock.  Maybe that is why we didn't have any for dinner!!  During the evening hours, I worked away on my hexies. 

I had cut some out of a Kona Solid - Butter (I believe). I wanted to add a little solid to the pretty printed color of the Happy-Go-Lucky. The hexies made for a great take along project.  Not very much to pack and no sewing machine required. I finished up the giant hexie flower by the end of last weeks vacation, but

I decided to try to finish it all up and for




and .....

Ta-DAH!!

 

I finished it!!!!  I hand sewed the whole mini.  (A first for me)  It finishes at 24" square.  I used DMC 972 - orange, a pretty aqua, and DMC 3801 - the salmon pink, to do the quilting on the outer edge of the hexies.

 

I love the sweet summer colors in this fabric line.  As a little extra added challenge, I decided since I had spent hours hand sewing all the hexies together, hand sewing them down and then hand sewing the decorative colors for quilting that it just wouldn't be right if I was to use my machine to do the binding.  So, as an added challenge, I hand sewed down the binding also.  It is so much more time consuming, but it does leave the binding nice and smooth after it is completed. 

 

 

 

 

 

I challenged myself on so many different levels with this mini, but I think it was well worth it in the end.  I am looking forward to working on another hexie project, but maybe a bit bigger than this one.

Say It With Flowers Blog Hop!

it is no surprise to you that flowers are my summer passion. 

I love any and every type. 

My yard is full of a huge variety. 

I lean towards red and purple, because they attract the butterflies. 

Here are just a few from my favorite garden area.

I would love to show you some more in bloom, but with the late snow we had in May, the garden is a little behind and I have to show you my little blog project.   Well, since I love to garden, I thought I would make a little something to be used in the garden this summer.

A handy gardening apron.  It has nice deep pockets, so I can slip my pruners in.  (I am always setting them down somewhere and can't find them.)

 It is made from canvas and duck cloth, so it should be good and heavy duty for all my gardening needs.  And I appliqued the flower on the pockets for a little added detail.  Well, I just couldn't stop there. 


But first a little back detail, My dad made me the most awesome little early birthday present.  It is my very own sewing cabinet.  And, of course, I love it.  Nice big drawers and a spot to set my serger and if you want, you can fold it all up. 

  Isn't just gorgeous?  A lot better than me using the dining room table.  (We were all getting very tired of that.)  My hubby had an office chair out in his garage waiting for a new home, but

It was a bit boring.  SO, how about some flowers on it.

Oh, so much better.  A little slip cover!!
