A Little More of Things I Love Thursday

I thought I would once again share a little of the things that I love.  I love windmills.  I love the way they set on the horizon.  Some stand proud and others show signs of aging and abuse.  I thought I would share with you some from a Sunday drive we took a couple weeks ago.

The weather here is unseasonably warm and it was a great day to get out and enjoy the day.

It is like a vision of the past.  How easy of  a life we have now.

 What do you love today?

Eskimo Yo-Yo

I thought that I would show you a finished wall hanging that I recently finished for a cousin who lives up north.  (I hope she already received it or I just blew the surprise.)  I love most paintings of Barbara Lavallee, a renowned artist in Alaska.  She has a variety of prints and now you can purchase quilt patterns of some of her more famous painting.  I have made two of the quilt patterns that are available on-line.  I was lucky enough to have some connections in Alaska and they stopped by The Quilted Raven in Anchorage, AK. and pick me up a couple different patterns.

Her patterns were the first that I tried applique on.   I made 5 of these around Christmas.  My wrist was exhausted from cutting so many pieces.  Batik fabrics work great for these.  Well, on to the next project.  I linked up to Such a Sew and Sew with projects you finished in March.

Scrap Happy Shoes Tutorial

If you need to do a quick fix on a pair of shoes or just want to make them a little more fun, have I got the tutorial for you.  First you need a pair of shoes.  Our shoes were slightly injured in some outdoor activities.
Here are the supplies that you will need:  Mod Podge, fabric scraps, scissors, a paint brush and x-acto or utility knife.
Before, you begin you need to clean the shoes really well.  Cover the area in which you would like to put the fabric generously with glue.  I cut the fabric in stripes for the desired pattern I wanted.
After you are finished covering the area with fabric, cover it with more of the Mod Podge.

I then trimmed the excess fabric off with a sharp pair of scissors.  Make sure that you wash the scissors off well after you cut the fabric.
I wanted to add a little variation to the front of the shoes, so I cut out three little hearts to add to the toe and did the same as above.

Last, I decided to add a little bling to the back of the shoe.

And there you have it, cute Scrap Happy Shoes!!

Homemade Scrubbies

I recently tried out this new thread from Lily called Scrubby at the request of my husband.  It came in several colors and was relatively easy to use.

I crocheted a circle and a square.  At first the scrubbies were a little rough, but after a use it was about like a loofah sponge.  If you want to add a little color and variance to your shower scrubber, I would definitely recommend this yarn.  Lily also put out a crochet book with cute little roses and pansies scrubbies that would make a great gift for a loved one or for a little indulgence for yourself.

Pleasantly Surprised!

Have you ever been slightly taken back by a strangers actions?  It happened to us today at the local coffee house drive-thru.  We ordered our drinks and made it to the window.  The coffee employee stated that the car in front of us had paid for our drinks and the only reply from the kind stranger was "Pay It Forward."  So often we get in our little ruts or in our own little world and don't look at the big picture.  I am as guilty as the next person, but maybe every time we could just make a little difference in someones day and "Pay It Forward."  Even if it is remembering to take out the trash, or doing a small chore for the next door neighbor, our actions directly affect the lives of others. Happy St. Patty's Day

What did the little green man bring you?  He brought a lovely shade of green muffins and a tall glass of green milk to the house.  They had just a little bit of luck and a whole lot of love added.  The wee ones loved it.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Did the little guy bring you something special today?

Scrap Happy Shoes

We ran into a little problem with a pair of dress shoes.  Of course, we will be needing them very soon for an occasion.  Well, this is what they looked like....
a mess!! I had used a sharpie marker on the scuff mark.  It took away the white, but the material was all rolled over and awful looking.  So, we of course decided to take action.  It is so hard to find a pair of shoes that your kids like and still look like kid shoes.  And this is what we came up with..
Super cute shoes, that would bring out the kid in all of us.  An easy fix to a big mess!

Everyone Needs A Little Luck!

I have been on this huge crocheting kick.  I started working on this little fella and finally finished him last night.  I named him Kelley, just in time for St. Patty's Day.  He makes me laugh every time I see him.  He needs a  little gold in his pot.  He might need a girl leprechaun to go along with him.

What makes you laugh, today?

Crocheted Owl

I have had this crochet book for awhile and decided to try out the little owl patterns at Midnight last night.  It is called More Cute Little Animals to Crochet by Amy Gaines. The pattern called for doll eyes, but I chose buttons instead.  The owl will not be used by small children, so the buttons would do instead of doll eyes.  It was a relatively easy pattern.  I used different colors of brown to add a bit more character.  This is what I came up with.
His beak is a little crooked, but it gives him a little character. What have you tried new lately?

Missouri Star Quilt Co.

So if you are relatively new to quilting like myself there is a great shop on the Internet.   It has Deals of the Day and offers a huge amount of tutorials from the basics to advanced techniques.  I have called them several times about material colors and better matches of material, and they are more than happy to help you. If you have a minute go and check them out at Missouri Star Quilt Company. Pin It Now!

Things I Love (or Like) Thursday

So for one day a week, I thought I would share things, products, or ideas that I like or love for the week.  Since, this is my first week of blogging, I thought that I would share a little about myself.  I love the outdoors.  I love all the flowers and the grass between your toes.  Feeling the warm sun on your back, while you are pulling weeds.  Or just kicking back with a glass of iced tea in your hand and good friends around.  With that being said .....

I love that flowers are beginning to show their pretty little faces around here.  If you haven't noticed the signs of spring, stop and look around they are all around you.

Owl Messenger Bag

So, I was recently at Moda Bake Shop and found the cutest pattern for an Owl Messenger Bag from Jo's Country Junction.  It was perfect size for youngsters to carry their own things in.  This is what I made with Jo's pattern.  I added velcro on the inside for added security.  If you choose to put velcro on, do it before you add the eyes and beak on.
I made the larger size and it is big enough for them to carry a notebook in and some other goodies. Pin It Now!

Owl Cake

So, one of the more "in" things are Owls and who doesn't love a personalized cake.  My sister who claims to have no creativity whatsoever (I think she proved herself wrong) came up with the cutest idea for one of her girls birthday cakes.  It is so easy, that even a small helper could make this feathered friend.
You need to make two round cake in the standard size cake pans.  Frost the cakes in any color you desire.  As you can see she used a pink color.  If you need at great butter cream recipe, I always use
1/2 Cup Shortening
1/2 Cup Butter (softened)
1 teas. Vanilla
4 Cups Confectionery sugar
4 Tbs. Milk
You can also use the tub premade frosting that you purchase at the store and dye it to the color you prefer.  After you are finished frosting the cake, you can add you candies:
For the whites of the eyes, she used mini marshmallows.  The cute little feathered pattern was finished with mini Chips Ahoy!  The eyes were Reese's mini cups.  She took seven yellow Tootsie Fruit Rolls and made the claws and the beak by rolling them.  She added a cute little green bow in its hair. (Also by molding green Tootsie Fruit Rolls).  She the above pic for placement of the candies.
Hope you enjoy my first little tutorial!
