Of course since the weather here was absolutely gorgeous this weekend, I was busy outside. Like most families that have older children, they grow out of a few things. One is their favorite wheeled transportation. We have a tricycle that was destined to set in the shed for years or get donated to the nearest DAV, but I couldn't yet part with the little gem. It was a Radio Flyer, only the paint was chipped and it need a few minor repairs.
Well, I told my hubby of my crazy idea and of course since it involved a spray paint can, he was all over it. We picked up a light color spray on primer and two of my new favorite colors: lime and turquoise. He took it all apart, which did involve a whole lot of work. Then he sanded up the rough spots, primed it, and painted it. And this is what we came up with:
I had bought a couple metal planters last year and had no clue that this is what I would be using them for. We used a drill and punched holes into the planters to allow the water to drain and I could use wire to tie them up to the main shaft of the tricycle.
I then added some potting soil and planted our herbs. I put Basil in the top and Cilantro in the bottom planter. They are both supposed to keep away the mosquitoes and during the dog days of summer, we need all the help we can get.
So don't get rid of that tricycle that has seen better days, give it a little face lift and you too can have a cute little herb garden addition to your yard.

That is so adorable!

DeleteWhat a wonderful idea and really pretty simple too! I love when something can be easy to do but looks like it must have taken forever. This looks classy and cute! And even though the classic red of a Radio Flyer trike is so adorable, I love that you freshened it up with your own favorite bright colors. Fabulous!! Would love to see update shots with the flowers growing in it sometime :)

DeleteI picked up a tricycle off the side of the road just for this purpose but I love the planters and how you secured them to the tricycle! Love it. The paint colors is what is brilliant and I'm definitely going to copy that. Thanks so very much. We learn so much from one another. Wow. Cool.
ReplyDeleteLinda,
DeleteThere is no greater compliment then someone replicating your work. Thank you! I have also found that if you use a few tabs of double sided Velcro on the top planter it won't side around. The bottom doesn't need it as much.
Amy :)
Oh my goodness! This is pretty much the cutest planter ever! Love it!

I love this! We have an old red tricycle in our attic. It's not safe enough to pass on to our grandson, but I don't know if my other son (21yo, whose bike it used to be) will even part with it! We'll see...
ReplyDeleteThis is very cute, I love it and it looks wonderful in the garden.
