Storage Bench

I recently received my monthly issue of Family Handyman. (Love this magazine!)

Yes, I am woman who loves a great project and is always looking for a little more storage space (aren't we all). I showed my hubby the great bench, that it had in its pages, made from a wall cabinet. Being the great man he is to put up with all my crazy, he obliged.

We bought our supplies at the local hardware store, which were two cabinets, screws, oak trim, a couple  2" by 4".  We had the stain on hand, so we didn't have to purchase it.   We have a long empty wall that was not being used sufficiently, so we double the recipe for the cabinet and connected two together. Of course the cost was also doubled than that of just one, but if your are going to do something, you might as well do it the way you want the first time.

The cost was also driven up because we finished the whole project in red oak instead of opting for the cheaper painted version. We also did not put bun feet on the bottom of the bench.  We did not have all the tools required to make the feet, so we skirted the cabinets in oak chair rail and added felt feet to the bottom to prevent scratching on our wood floors.   I also found this great outdoor canvas to make the cushion with on CLEARANCE (one of my favorite words).   I hope that being outdoor canvas, that it withstands the munchkins and makes for easy clean-up.  With a couple hours of work and around $225, we built this.  A little different from the pattern, but I am completely in love with the beauty of the stained wood.  If you have any questions, please don't be afraid to ask.

A beautiful piece of furniture, that will be here for the next few generations.

And a bunch more storage space for my fabric!

  2. How tall are the cabinets you used?

    1. I used unfinished cabinets that were 15" tall. You can add bun feet, if you wish to make your seat a bit taller.
